Welcome to 5th Grade!
I am so excited to welcome you to our classroom for this year! I look forward to learning, exploring, questioning, and experiencing so much with all of you! I have a lot in store for us! I love teaching, as well as learning with and from my students! Each and every one of you are unique, special, and amazing in your very own ways, and I look forward to learning about your uniqueness and getting to know you! I will share my hopes, dreams, and favorites, as well as my fears and not-so-favorites. I hope you will share yours with me!
For reading, we will be using Core Knowledge Language
Arts (CKLA). It is a rigorous reading program with a wide variety of
genres and topics that are Social Studies or fiction based.
We are using the Bridges math program. It
is a very challenging program with a different way of doing math. I look forward to working through this program with these little mathematicians!
Our writing curriculum focuses on writing for a wide variety of
purposes, and we will participate in creating many fun pieces of writing.
We will be using Daily Language Instruction to learn grammar. This is not part of the CKLA curriculum but will be implemented throughout our Literacy time.

Science topics are changing and we will be piloting the units from a couple different companies in order to make a decision on which company to use in the future. I assure you that both of these programs are rigorous and engaging. Mrs. Good will be teaching your science class.

In Social Studies, you will experience US History, geography,
economics, as well as the rights, roles, and responsibilities of
citizens, also known as civics. Mrs. Brown will be your Social
Studies teacher.
There are also many skills and techniques to be learned in your art, PE, and music classes! Your PE teachers
have shared that you will be participating in Tinikling, the
Turkey Trot, and, of course, the ever famous field day!
We will be using a wide variety of technology in our classroom.
We will work with the tried and true paper, pencil, and marker tools,
but I have a lot of apps, websites, and other software just waiting for
you to learn, create, and show what you know! We will be using iPads,
iPhones, and computers, so be ready to develop your techy side!
We will also work our way through a Digital Citizenship and Safety curriculum
this year in order to keep us safe and using the internet appropriately.
I am eagerly waiting to meet each of you and get our wonderful 5th grade year underway!
